Learning 2.0

During the first half of the semester the class was not as interactive as it became the second semester. The first part was like web 1.0 were you could get information but you did not respond to the information, the second half was like web 2.0 where as a class we discussed the information and shared our opinions.

The second half like web 2.0 allowed for discussion about what we read and the tool we were learning about. The discussion in my opinion was very beneficial I fell that web 2.0 was the learning environment that helped me learn the most. When we did our presentations not only did I learn about my tool I got to learn about many other tools. I learned more than if I had to learn each tool for myself because the amount of time dedicated to each tool would be less than the amount of time I dedicated to the one.

With the discussions I get to open my mind and take in other people opinions and knowledge on a subject that otherwise I might never know.

I found the second half of the semester where we discussed things in class and talked about what we were learning instead of just reading to be more beneficial to me. The only thing that could improve would be to keep people from getting off on a tangent, but that is hard to do in a class discussion so we just will have to take the good with the bad.

Evernote... My learning tool

My learning tool was Evernote, a website that allows you to gather notes from different sources. You can clip a website to Evernote, send a picture from either a website or your cell phone, and write yourself a memo from the website or send yourself a text message.

The best part is no matter where you are if there is a computer with Internet than you can access your account on Evernote. Evernote is free though if you need to upload lots of information you can purchase a unlimited upload amount.

During my weeks of using my learning tool I have found that it is not as convenient as I thought it would be. I did not use it much in my everyday life, though if you are doing a project, working on research, or comparing ideas to purchase.

I did use Evernote during my search for a new refrigerator because I could search the different websites like Sears, Home depot, and Lowe's and save the web site to my Evernote and then go to the one website to compare them.

I found that Evernote is nice to have if I am at school and want to pull up my information that I found at the house. Though I did not feel that Evernote helped me learn but it made my learning a little more convenient because I could save the information I found and pull it back up at a later date.

Interview about INTERNET

The person I interviewed does use the internet they use it for email and homework. They use it a couple of times a day, but not near as much as say somebody like me.
I use the internet for many hours a day. My interviewee has a working computer but they do not have internet at there home they work a part time job and do not have much free time.
They know how to use the internet but only use it at the school. My interviewee does not really have anything against the internet but with out access in there home they can not take full advantage of what the internet has to offer.

My Dream Job........

My Dream Job would to be a PHOTOGRAPHER, I would love to be a sports or nature photographer for a magazine.

On the current jobs handout to be an assistant photographer you are required 1-3years experience as an assistant or assistant photographer in digital studio, have an eye for visual composition, know Photoshop, Leaf Capture, Phase One, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, pref AA/AS or BA/BS in photography.

I need to have experience in a digital studio because I only have job experience for working at a Photo Lab. I would say that I an eye for visual composition. I need to learn a few programs like Leaf Capture and Phase One. Though the biggest thing I like is a degree, which is why I am working on it.

Zimbabwe

After doing both parts of this project I have decided that I need the Internet more than I realized. I went to the library, tried to look up Zimbabwe on the book catalog and did not have any look. I finally got help from the lady at the reference desk she looked up Zimbabwe and found a book for me to go find. I wrote down the call number and went on exploring.

When I finally got up stairs I walked in circles looking for the DT section once I found the section it should be in I looked and looked and could not find the book with the number the computer told me to get. So I looked at the other books in the area and picked a couple of books to take to the table to look through. After all of this I had about 2omins and had no clue if the book had any valuable information in it.

After this expense I have decided that the only advantage of not using the Internet and actuallibrary is the peace and quiet and the ability to focus on what I am working on. The disadvantage is that the information is out of date and does not give any new information.

The internet is such a wonderful way to do research, type into a search bar what you are looking for and just like that there is information on my topic. I can look up information on the internet when it is my convenience and I can stop and come back to it as I need. I don't have to walk around hoping that I am in the right location I can sit on my comfortable couch.

The only disadvantage that comes to mind is that you have to look at what type of website you are on to see if it is reliable or not.

The information was more timely then what I found in the library. I found information from earlier this year on the internet and in the library the newest information was from 2004.

After these two hours I am glad that for most of my projects I get to have the use of the internet.

My research with and without the internet

In 1987 Robert Mugabe became Zimbabwe’s first executive president replacing Canaan Banana. Then in 1990 Mr. Mugabe wins another presidential election and his ZANU (Zimbabwe African People Union) wins a majority in Parliament.

Later Mugabe announced an acceleration of the land resettlement programme saying that the private white farmers would not be fully compensated. Then in January of 1998 riots broke out because of the steep food prices.

Mugabe has won many presidential elections since he was first put in office, though he won again by using every dirty trick making it not a fair election.

Then in 2003 there was a downward spiral, the economy was in tatters and almost a million peasants were on the brink of famine. The economic crisis was attributed to the political causes.
In 2009 Zimbabwe has faced collapse due to failing to get financial aid from the internal community, this has cause concern because the government may no longer be able to pay its workers and this could cause serious unrest.

Zimbabwe needs $8.5 billion in financial aid in order to rebuild its economy but nobody wants to donate due to the skepticism over President Mugabe’s sincerity in working with the opposition.

Race is not a Gene!

After reading through pages of information about the Human Race Machine I have learned that there is no gene for race and that the DNA of two people is 99.97 percent the same.

The Human Race Machine is a black machine that has a digital camera, a screen and a joystick. The machine takes your picture and then you move placement markers around on your face to tell the computer where your eyes, mouth and nose are. After making the placements you tell the machine what race you want to see and it shows your face as a different race. The machine can also show your face 20 years from now.

According to the information I found online the machine was invented in 2000 by Nancy Burson and is available to rent for weeks at a time and is on display at certain museums.

What I learned about NPR.

After hearing the Digital Thinkin some questions emerged like who owns NPR, and are people using the Internet to listen to NPR.
What I have learned about this is that NPR is a privately supported non profit organization who is partnered with PBS. Also NPR offers the original broadcast on there website and has hourly newscast were people can keep updated.
They talked at the digital thinkin about the new IPhone App and us non IPhone owners were wondering what else that had to offer for the mobile society.
I found out that they have a link for Blackberry users and that if you are with T Mobile or ATT NPR is available in the phones news section.
I found the conversation helpful because we as Mass Communication Majors are heading out into these fields and we need to be aware of how the Internet is affect the major business and what they are trying to do to stay up with the fast paced society and the changing technology. If major organizations like NPR can not find a way to keep up the jobs that are available to us and are job requirements will be effected.
It would have been more informative if I could have kept up with the topics they were discussing, watching the video I kept filling like I missed what was happening. The answers to most of the questions were very generic and not much time was spent going into detail.
Though overall I think it helped me realize how much the Internet affects the world around me.

Tweeting, Tweeting, Tweeting....

After tweeting for 48 hours I am more comfortable with Twitter and how to use it. I kept hearing about Twitter but before this weekend was hesitant about using it with my tweets being available for all to see. I like the fact that I can ask a question and get an answer or even vent when I did something really stupid (like blow a casserole dish up). It was fun to see what my class mates had going on and how they spent their weekend.

I need to take the time to set updates to come to my phone but don’t want all of the people I follow tweets coming to my phone or it would never stop. Wondering if I can set certain people to get updates from or if I have get updates from everybody

. I defiantly will keep my twitter account because I like to get the updates and stay up on what is going on (finding out the score of a game).

I still have trouble sometimes understanding somebody’s conversation when I search by the hash tag; I fill like I missed something. I did find the view conversation button and that helped some though it shows the same tweet twice. I wish my blackberry had an app for twitter but found the number that I text my tweets to and that worked well, I did not get the re-tweets though tell I got off work and got on my computer.

I still have some playing around to do but think that I have gotten the main things down during my 48 hours of tweeting definitely know more now than I did on Friday.

Reasons I use to Internet

The use the internet for many things some for fun and some to make everyday task easier. I use the internet for social networking, websites like blogger, facebook, twitter, so that i can stay in touch with people.

I also use the internet for online banking, I can transfer money from one account to the other, and pay my loan payments all while sitting in my living room and not driving the hour to get to my bank.

I use it to view my pay stub and make sure it is correct. Walmart has gone green so we do not get paper pay checks or pay stubs so this way I can find out how much my check is going to be almost a week before payday.

To pay my bills, it is quick and easy. I can pay online the day it due and it will be posted to my account. I don't have to worry about make sure I mail it off in time to be there on the due date and I don't have to worry about a stamp or waste a check.

To see what is happening in the news, instead of watching a segment of news on television I can log on to the internet read and read the news that interest me.

I use it to watch movies and TV shows on website like hulu.com and fancast.com. To see when the shows I like will be on so that I can DVR them.

I use it to order movies and video games to come through the mail at a montly fee. I use netflix.com and gamefly.com and I can log on see what movies or games are coming out add them to my queque and then just get them in the mail and few days later, quick and easy.

I use the internet to order photos and share pictures with people. I like to use the Photo Lab on Walmart.com, I like the quality for the prints and the prices are really good. Though I work there and am a little biased. One of the cool things about the photo part of walmart.com is that you can send the pictures to any Wal Mart, I send pictures to my mom in Texas and to my Grandma in California and it does not cost any difference than to print them here in my local Wal Mart.

I use the internet for education, with so many websites you can learn about anything. I use it to research information from things about Iran and the Nuclears Weapons to what is the best Camera on the market now.

Though I use the internet for some many things, I mainly use it for entertainment. Playing Games, Social Networking, Watching Movies and TV Shows, Reading Game Reviews, Watching YouTube Videos and the list could keep going. The internet can be used in so many ways depending on what you need to do.

Net Neutrality and the FCC

If I understand correctly what the Net Neutrality laws will put into effect. I think that they will be a good thing.

The Net Neutrality would make all web traffic be treated equal from the internet service providers, no provider could allow one site but block another. According to the FCC the FCC chairman Julius Genachowsk will "affirm his support for a free and open Internet". Internet Providers could not discriminate against particular Internet content or applications.


It would also prevent Internet providers from blocking or slowing bandwidth-hogging Web traffic such as streaming video or other applications that put a strain on their networks. The internet providers would have to make it available to us, there consumers, there policies.

If this is truly what the FCC wants to enforce I think it would be a good thing, or otherwise the internet will turn into a few websites because the providers block or slow down the start of new websites. The Internet should continue to be a place for information to flow freely and no provider should be able to block websites that hurt there bandwidth.

Going beyond the surface of the Internet

I am taking the Internet and Society Class so that I can learn beyond the surface, learn how to use social gathering sites for more than just staying in touch with friends. I think that learning these things are important because the internet is an important part of society and is used in careers that I want to pursue. I think that we are covering some of the most important parts of the internet and can't really think of anything that I think we should cover that is not already in the plans.

I agree with the Norm that says The NetGen has a need for speed-and not just in video games. We are such a busy society that we expect things to be fast, I pay for fast internet so that I can download quicker, send emails quicker, and just search the internet quicker. I have a black berry so that I can check my email and be in touch with people on the run. I always want things to be quicker, and is always looking for a faster easier way to do everyday tasks.

Me and Web 2.0

As I read about Web 2.0 on O'Reilly Media I felt that Web 2.0 is really the difference in creativity and how it can be used. Web 2.0 gives us services, allows us to be creators, gives us to ability to blog, have wikis, use Google to its fullest, share and store pictures, and download mp3's.

Web 2.0 affects me because I am internet user, I take advantage of all the things Web 2.0 allows user's to do. I have a blog, a wikis, a Google Reader, a facebook, a email address, I share my pictures, I play and download music.
The most important part of Web 2.0 is the fact that it gives me a job, more and more people are using the internet to order there pictures and by working in the Walmart Photo lab the online photo lab on Walmart.com is where we get a lot of our business. Without the online portion the number of people working in the photo lab would be cut. With all of the things Web 2.0 does it make doing my daily tasks much easier.

Internet

Well, I just got off work and the first thing I did was get on the Internet check the yahoo main page, had to see what was on yahoo's news and check out my Facebook to see what my friends have been up to.

I did not have to go to a building or use a huge computer or even spend more than just a few seconds to get on the Internet.

When the Internet was developed in 1962 I doubt that the developers would have ever thought that almost ever household would have a computer and Internet access much less that would mainly use it for entrainment purposes.

They would have never thought about the fact that it would be used to watch news from all over the world or view pictures, watch videos or have a farm on Facebook. They would not have thought of virtual Farms and Mafias. If you would have told developers that in 2009 you could send pictures from California to Texas with just a click of a button or that you could order Pizza to be developed to your house today or three weeks from now. They would have no way to imagine such things as possibility's.

I don't think they knew that there work would be used for entertainment purposes. When they developed the Internet they were just thinking about making communication at work.

I think that what the developers imagined what the Internet become is completely different then what it is today. You don't have to have a PHD to make your own Internet page much less to just post a comment. You don't even have to be over the age of five to know that you can play games and watch videos.

When they came up with email they wanted a way to communicate inside a office. They would be amazed at the things you can do with emails. You can just chat back in forth or you can send somebody a picture that you took of your children or pay your bills.

In 1962 there was no such things as digital pictures or video, if you needed to pay your bills you ran around town or dropped them in the mail weeks before they were due.

I think that if the developers could see what it has become they would be in shock proud of the good thinks that comes from the Internet, online classes, education, news but they would be sick to know all of the bad things that people use the Internet for like, stealing, stocking, taking peoples identity, posting child pornography or making and sending virus through emails.

The Internet can be a great resource it depends on what we the users put out there.

Comparing BLOGS

I chose to compare two blogs about the DALLAS COWBOYS video score board because at my house we bleed silver and blue.

The first site CyberTheater does not do a very good job of using the tips for writing because it is just a short summary of what the NFL stated. There is really no details and it is just one paragraph all ran together and there is nothing to make it stand out. The only nice thing about this blog is that it contains a video showing what happened with the video bored.

The Second site TechDare does a better job at making there blog easy to read and eye catching. Though it is still just one paragraph it does a better job of have different colored words and a bold heading. It also has a picture that links to the NFL page with a full story of what happened.

I do think that the writing style would impact if readers come back to these blogs. The CyberTheater blog is not something I would go back to because it is just a messy site and there is really not a much of a writers voice just straight forward facts.

The Tech Dare blog adds a little extra to there blog making it more interesting to read and with it linking out to the NFL page if I wanted to know more I check it out with ease.

ME AGAIN!!!

My name is Kassie but I go by KC, and one day when I am working as a photographer that will be my symbol.

I am from a small town in TEXAS, growing up there we called it GRAHAM, AMERICA OR G-TOWN. Because it is a sheltered town in its own little world, where everybody knows who you, your parents and your siblings are.

That town has the best food, I make special trips back just for some CHICKEN EXPRESS AND VETONI'S. There is also a DRIVE- IN THEATER which is amazing since so few are still working.

When I was a senior in High School I started working at WAL-MART because there is not much else but fast food. This is my 4th year at Wal- Mart and my 3rd year in the PHOTO LAB, I have always liked my job until here lately.

WAL-MART has gone to this stupid score card scheduling that is computer generated, LIKE A COMPUTER REALLY KNOWS WHEN WE ARE GOING TO BE BUSY!!! They have taken all the personal stuff out of the schedule .

The computer does not care if you get out of school at 12:50 you have to be at work by 1:00, or if you would like to be off before midnight because you have school the next morning and need to study for a test.

I am suppose to be working FULL TIME but they have cut everybodys hours and I am getting PART TIME hours. They are trying to make less people do the same job and in a shorter amount of time.

I made it through the first week back at school and between my school and work schedule I am always GOING, I have decieded that this Semester will be CRAZY but I will make it one day at a time.

They have changed up the way they do things and we are on stupid score card scheduling I now work short shifts on the weekends and go start from school to work on weekdays. I am a full time employee bearly getting part time hours, they are trying to make less people with less hours do the same job as before all this went down. My life is crazy but I make it one day at time....
